I am no expert economist but I worry about the next shock. My concern has to do with the value of commercial office space buildings. With the move towards hybrid and remote office work, there are many buildings that are near empty or at less than 50% occupancy. This has to drive down the value of such properties. What happens to banks that have loans out to such commercial properties? I would think the value of those assets decreases hence the value of the bank’s loans drops well below the level of the collateral. I have not read about this as a possible problem for banks (i.e. undercollateralized loans).
