I will avoid commenting on the ethical issues around facial recognition. However, I will add these technology related comments to the discussion.
First, indeed, facial recognition may be flawed today. However, the technology is still early stage. One should expect that, over time, such technology involving the use of higher performance cameras, improved big data management and analytics will gradually result in radically enhanced performance. It would not be surprising to find that, at some point, machine based facial recognition would likely exceed the accuracy, breath and speed of human facial recognition.
Second, it is all well and good to ban facial recognition in the US. Even if this were to happen, development of facial recognition technology will continue to evolve with or without US participation. Likewise, its usage will also expand globally.
Despite objections, it may take 10 or 20 years (or more) for the technology to achieve highly refined accuracy and analytics but it will inevitably happen.
