Not all "protective cases" actual provide protection. The usual thin cases do little to help. When the phone is dropped, the case material compresses providing little protection. Worst case, the relatively hard cases provide negligible energy dissipation. Thicker cases increase the mass thereby actually increasing the G-load in drop.
